You must file a return if you are required to based on the amount of income you had. If you had more than $6300 of W-2 income, you must file a return. If you had less than that but had federal income tax withheld, you should file a return to get a refund.

If you had more than $400 of 1099-MISC income, you must file a return to pay self employment tax.

If you had scholarship income reported on your 1098-T in box 5 that exceeded the amount in box 1 or box 2, you must enter it on your tax return by entering the 1098-T.

If you file a tax return, you must indicate on it that you can be claimed as a dependent by someone else.

Should I File The 1098 Form Even If My Mom Filed It?

If the amount in box 5 is more than the amount in box 1 or box 2, that means scholarship income paid for non qualified expenses and is taxable on your tax return and you must enter it.

Yes. It is taxable on your return but not your mom's.

It will not be entered as income on her tax return. It is only entered as income on the student's tax return.
