How do I file for an extension while overseas? The address section is requiring a state which I cannot provide because we are not in the US.

We are waiting on documents to arrive in the mail, and have no idea how long they will take with overseas mail delivery.

If you owe taxes, regardless of whether you are in the U.S. or abroad, you must pay by April 18.

If you live outside the U.S. and meet certain guidelines, you must file your return by June 15. If you still need more time, you can file an extension with TurboTax Easy Extension to file your return by October 16.

To get this automatic extension, you must file Form 4868 (PDF). Print the form out, complete it and mail it to the IRS. The IRS form does not have a foreign address layout but insert your foreign address.

Where To File a Paper Form 4868: A foreign country, American Samoa, or Puerto Rico, or are excluding income under Internal Revenue Code section 933, or use an APO or FPO address, or file Form 2555, 2555-EZ, or 4563, or are a dual-status alien, or are a nonpermanent resident of Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands

  • And you’re making a payment, send Form 4868 with your payment to Internal Revenue Service: P.O. Box 1302 Charlotte, NC 28201-1302 USA
  • And you’re not making a payment, send Form 4868 to Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center: Austin, TX 73301-0215 USA
