Thank you for the right answer.  This works!   I went to "Tools" and then "Topics List".   And more the 3/4 of the way down I found "Other Tax Situations"!  Thank you!

Extensions form your computer must be printed and mailed.

Use the online "Easy Extension".

Does this solution apply to state tax programs?  If so, are there exceptions?

Many states automatically extend if you extend the Federal return.  What is your state?

Only correct one in this forum. I found out the hard way that this cannot be filed electronically with Turbo Tax.

Last time I'll buy their program.

You can file an extension through TurboTax, see here.     @jimeaster22

You can also get an extension by paying all or part of your estimated income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an extension using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or a credit or debit card. This way you won’t have to file a separate extension form and you will receive a confirmation number for your records.

In TurboTax Online, you can search for extend and use the Jump to extend link to e-file your extension.

You might be able to go to this link: https://turbotax.intuit.com/irs-tax-extensions/  and complete the online request and transmit it. It is worth a try.

Use this link to file the IRS and State extensions you need.  It's free.  (I know you don't need an extension for California, but unsure of the other two states:  TurboTax Easy Extension

@cne5191 It is too late for you to ask for an extension for your 2020 tax return unless you live in TX and then you have until midnight tonight to MAIL an extension request to the IRS.    Everyone else had until May 17 to request an extension if needed; after that it is too late and you are just late.   If you are getting a refund there is no penalty for missing the deadline.  If you owe tax due and missed the filing deadline then you are subject to late filing penalties and interest on the tax owed.

If you need to mail an extension request to the IRS from TX:

Thank you! I don't know why they make it so hard to find.  Any other reference I found pointed to online filing, which then doesn't save any payment data in the file where you need it for ultimately filing (desktop version.)  Even using "Search" in the downloaded product, just points you to a discussion of using Turbotax Online to do it.

I will only use a downloaded product -- will never (knowingly) allow my personal financial data to be uploaded to the cloud.
