You will find an option to do that when you log into your TurboTax program, where you will see an option to file an extension

how does that track with the payments that were made with IRS directly?

To apply for an extension in your TurboTax Online program, you can do the following:

  1. Click on the search icon in the upper right of your TurboTax screen
  2. Type "extend" in your search box
  3. Click on the link "Jump to extend"
  4. Your screen will say "Applying for an Extension"
  5. Answer "Yes" to the question "program,"
  6. Select "Continue"
  7. Follow the TurboTax screens and answer all of the follow-up questions

It will connect with your taxes via your social security number.

again, Im asking not how to file but how does that track with the payments that were made with IRS directly?
I file with TT but then I pay what I think I owe separately on IRS.gov

Yes, as stated above, everything is connected through your social security number.

This means that the payment made on the IRS website will automatically show up in the correct place inside TurboTax after a few days?

No, the payments you make on the IRS website aren't communicated to TurboTax.

If you are making payments before filing the return, such as payment made with filing an extension, enter the payments in the Federal section under Deductions and Credits, Additional Payments under Estimated Tax Payments. Once you have entered all of your payments in the Federal section, then revisit the Form 2210.

In TurboTax Online:

  1. Go to Deductions & Credits
  2. Select Estimated Tax Payments
  3. Click Start or Revisit next to Federal estimated taxes for 2024
  4. Scroll down to Additional Payments
  5. Enter the Date Paid and Amount Paid
