However, the grant money is taxable so it could be the reason you owe taxes. Not having dependents could negatively impact your tax situation, as you would not be eligible for the child tax credit of up to $2,000 per child on your federal return. Most states have a deduction for dependents, so not having dependents could also negatively effect your state taxes as well.
