How do I deal with a Form 2210: Line D Withholding error?

I have no idea how to deal with this:

Check This Entry

Form 2210: Line D Withholding. The sum of the four columns is not equal to your total withholding of $XXXX for the year.

Line D Withholding:

Happened to me, too.  I looked at the error report which had an image of the worksheet and noted that the worksheet had four columns for withholding payments in 2020 when there should only be three periods.  I suspect that you filled out the information for Form 2210 before the 2/26/21 TurboTax update.  If you did, you provided information for four periods.  After the update TurboTax combined the first two periods into one period, but it appears that TurboTax left a "ghost" of you previous second period input in the worksheet and, presto, when they add all four columns in the worksheet it produces an error.  I fixed it by zeroing out the 2nd column in the worksheet in the error report.

While that solved that error, TurboTax did not fill out Part IV  of Form 2210 correctly.

I signed up to receive email updates, but haven't received anything. Is there any new information about how to resolve this issue of a Form 2210: Line D Withholding error? Thank you!

looks like TT didn't fix that in the coding for this year's program as I have a cx having the same exact issue this year...

The issue with form 2210 is a known experience which is currently being investigated. As soon as an update is made available we will be sure to communicate it. Sorry for any inconvenience @CarrieLiz94.

What is the status of the fix, please? 4 days to filing! Thank you!

I am experiencing the issue now. What can I do to file correctly since this apparently will not be resolved? Should I split my total withholding into a 3rd instead of a 4th, or do nothing?

I just figured out a way to correct it. I cannot guarantee if its the correct way as I am no tax expert but I think its a logical way.

Problem is due to rounding issues as explained in one other post. Due to a rounding issue Turbotax software t misses the last quarter value. Here is what I did. I followed a principle that I am ready to pay maybe a dollar more tax than what I actually owe. So the page where you entered withholding of all quarters just move all your cent values to last quarter.

For example if the correct values were Q1: 12.1 Q2: 15.4 Q3: 20.1 Q4: 5.4

Rather than entering above values you enter

Q1: 12 Q2: 15 Q3: 20 Q4: 6

That was your total holding value matches and it work.

If you enter 'correct' values, Turbotax will make it or something like (I am contiously making it simpler): Q1: 12 Q2: 15 Q3: 20 Q4: 5 and your overall holding in form 2210 will be lower than what you really entered.

By taking that one dollar forward you are saying to uncle Sam that yes I paid few cents less to you but in the end quarter my calculations are correct and pls charge me whatever you want to. Max $1 difference if there is but you'll be able to move forward.

Again, I am no tax expert but seeing that Turbotax is not replying, I had to look at it deeper. Thank you

Two years later...no update.

I am running into the same issue now with my 2022 taxes (due Oct 15th for my CA county)

What to do? Clearly TT is failing here on their accurate taxes promise

+1 more year with this issue.

Now I am facing exact same problem. When I am on "review" stage, the total was not adding up. But the problem is, i only see one box to enter and it does not give me for which quarter I need to enter the values. I wrongly entered another amount and it is now sitting in Q4 but there is no way i am able to modify that value anymore and i am kind of stuck completing 2023 return. It is frustrating.

@tt Support - can you please review and let me know if this bug is fixed? Thanks

Can you tell us the exact problem you are experiencing?

I've posted a screenshot below. My W2 withholding is $8564.78. A prior post here suggested it was a rounding error problem, so, in addition to entering 4250 as shown,  I tried entering 4249 and 4251, but none of those worked.

You have to go through the Annualized Adjusted Gross Income ahead of that screen to get the program to accept the numbers you enter. Go back in the program until you see Annualized Income Method and select yes. You can enter the income for the year, each box is cumulative. You will enter income, deductions, and taxes. This will get you through the program without the hassle.

That's ridiculous Amy. That is why we are PAYING for Turbo Tax. Why would we have to do this all ourselves and  how do we know what we are entering is correct? Seriously.

I am having the same exact problems and I don't feel confident enough to enter that information and expect it to be accurate. How any I supposed to account for all the deductions, etc...

You guys need to do the right thing and FIX IT.

I NEED HELP. I CANNOT FILE MY TAXES UNTIL THIS IS FIXED. WHAT ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS?

Unfortunately, the solution offered by @AmyC above is the correct one if you are trying to annualize your income in order to reduce your tax penalty.  In this particular instance you can decide not to annualize your income and just pay the penalty or make your best estimates and see if you can reduce your penalty.

When i initially went through the process it told me that I would to have to pay at penalty, but I would still need to fill out Form 2210 anyways, which it appeared it had filled in for me as expected, but unfortunately when i went to review for errors the below screen shot popped up...is it true that the program is simply not calculating as it should?

Do i need to add all my income up and try to subtract all the deductions and spread them out over the quarters on the annualized income part? I just not sure if how I do this and if it would be correct. I would hate to find myself entering the wrong calculations and end up in trouble...or under or overpay.

For clarification I make quarterly estimated payments, but my wife is a W2. Unfortunately she only had $77 of FIT withheld from her part time job of earned income of 26K. Unfortunately she did not have the right W4 selections :( and this was not caught until it was too late.

Thank you for the help.    RobertB4444

Same problem here for 2023 tax year using online version. How do you not fix this after multiple years??!!! And it offers only a single context-free box while the form image shows multiple columns. So I entered the total the first time and saw it put that in a column. Then I entered 1/4th the value and it put that in the next column. No way to go back and edit those columns. Seriously!!??

I would call that a complicated workaround, not "correct". Correct would be for the screen people are stumbling on to actually let you edit the columns, or provide a *labeled* data entry box where you could left and right from column to column. Each year the usability goes down - insufficient context, confusing instructions, data entry screens like this one that don't actually work... I've been using it for years and increasingly feels like you're purposely making it harder so people will opt for your paid professionals.

I have an issue with Form 2210 saying it didn't add up appropriately like the others but the cause is different. Tried to address on a call with customer service -- they were very friendly but couldn't fix the issue.

My issue: Line 6 of my form 2210 is filled out incorrectly by Turbotax and I cannot change it. Line 6 is supposed to list my withholdings and should only come directly from my W-2 Box 2 in my situation (I did not withhold anything further or make any quarterly payments). Instead, the figure listed in line 6 is $551 more than what was actually withheld by my company. So, when I input the correct amount by quarter, which is listed on all of my payslips and adds up to my full year W-2 withholdings, it says that I have input an incorrect amount because it is $551 below this made up number.

Not sure how I can solve because I cannot edit Line 6 myself. Looking for help from the tax experts here.
