How do I claim the remaining credit if I changed my child's name and SSN after adoption.

I adopted him in 2022, claimed the credit and understand I can claim what remains the following year. I can no longer use his old SSN and I was unable to change his SSN in TurboTax, so I deleted it and add him with the new info. It's the same child & DOB, but new name and SSN.

You should be able to claim the carry-over portion of the credit even if the name and Social Security Number changed.

Type   adoption credit   into the search-box and then click the "Jump to adoption credit" link

  • Or go to Deductions & Credits
  • You and Your Family
  • Adoption Credit
  • Start or Revisit

If you are in the same account as last season, the carry-over may be listed, if not, continue through this section.

You will get to a screen titled "Here's what you've told us so far"

Select CONTINUE on that screen to enter the 2022 credit carryforward on the screen that follows

If you updated the name and social security number with the social security administration, use the updated information on your tax return.

Thank you so much! I figured it out eventually. I was trying to do it all on the app but I needed to log into the website to change his SSN. (I'd actually deleted the old info and added him as a new kid, so once I reversed that by adding his birth name and SSN, then updating it on the website, it pulled in the credit.) Thank so much for your reply! I did try the search but wasn't successful.
