Hi. To change versions of TurboTax, you will need to clear your return and start over. You can do this as long as you have not paid for or registered your product yet.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax Online and open your return by clicking the orange Take me to my return button.
  2. With your screen maximized, click My Account (at the top of your screen toward the right) and select Clear & Start Over. (If on a tablet or phone, you may find the Clear & Start Over option by clicking the three parallel lines, or “hamburger”, in the top left corner.)
  3. Answer Yes to Are you sure you want to clear your return?
  4. After your entries have been cleared out, we'll prompt you to select a TurboTax product so you can start over from the very beginning.

A reason you might want to clear and start over is if you think you’re in a higher-priced version of TurboTax and don’t need to be. Have a look below under Related Information for more details.

If you're signed in under last year's login, once you clear and start over we'll automatically transfer last year's info over if you select the PLUS upgrade, Deluxe, Premier, or Self-Employed. Federal Free Edition (without PLUS) does not include the year-over-year transfer feature.

Are you kidding me?  I selected Deluxe and then Turbo tax automatically changed to self employed as that is that it was last year.  Now I have to re-enter everything?   After 9 years with this company, I can't believe there is not a way to fix this besides starting all over???  Please tell me this is not true...

You can downgrade using the clear and start over feature. However, you will be required to restart your return.

In TurboTax Online, you can erase your return and start from scratch as long as you haven't submitted payment, deducted the TurboTax fee from your refund, or registered.

  1. If you haven't already done so, sign in at TurboTax.com and select the blue Take me to my return button.
  2. On the welcome back screen, in the left-side menu, select Tax Tools, and then select Clear & Start Over (click or tap the 3 lines in the upper-left corner if you don't see this menu).
  3. Answer Yes in the pop-up to confirm.

I hate this so much, Turbo Tax.  This is ridiculous.  If I had another choice, I would never use you again.

Yes it's absolutely terrible. This year I am too lazy to re-do my whole taxes but I'll never use Turbo Tax again.

Yeah, I agree with the others.  This is BS.

I accidentally changed over to self-employed and now I cannot go back without starting over??

Arg!

Or one thing you can do is buy a lower version of the Desktop program like Deluxe.  Then you can switch from Online without starting over.  You can download the .tax2020 file from online for free and open it in the Desktop program (any version).  And the Desktop program has several other features and benefits over the Online version too.  See the Desktop CD/Download programs here,  https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/

I didn't even remember how I switched to self-employed version but I didn't notice until the very end.  I have been using TurboTax for 10+ years with Deluxe or Premier online.  You wasted hours of my time with bad UX, and you just lost a customer.

This is ridiculous. I called customer service and ask for help as I'm going through the same thing. Their solution is for me to share my screen so they can fix the issue. No thanks all my pii is in here. Now I'm switching to another tax company. Run away while u can. They ripped me off last year by using self employed product and haven't gotten my refund yet.
