How do I change my tax refund option from receiving a check to applying it to next year's estimated tax?

I completed my 2021 federal and state tax returns using TurboTax Premier.  I specified that I wanted mailed checks for both the federal and state refunds I have coming.  I completed both tax returns but I have NOT yet filed either one. I would like to change my refund option so that my refund for both federal and state is credited toward my 2022 estimated tax payments.  I don't see where I do this.  I appear to be able to change the refunds from mailed check to direct deposit, but I see no option for applying the refunds to next year's tax.  Can someone help?  Thanks.

To add, change or delete a current year federal tax refund to next year's taxes before you file your tax return -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Other Tax Situations
  • Under Additional Tax Payments
  • On Apply Refund to Next Year, click on the start or update button

Or enter apply federal refund to next year in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to apply federal refund to next year

The amount applied to next years taxes will be shown on Form 1040 Line 36

I had the same problem but my 2022 Turbotax does not recognize the change because the 2021 now reads no refund and 2022 TT says it can't apply it because there was no refund in 2021.  Will the IRS fix this?  Is there a manual way to enter it?

We'd love to help you complete your tax return, but need more information. Can you please clarify your question?

I too had the same problem.  I was able to go back to personal; other tax situations and choose to apply, but the option of doing a search for the topic did not work. I get the assistant that answered the question on the third try of the entering my question, but only to repeat telling me to search again. I state this so Turbo Tax can correct its AI.

Thank you,

Stupid software does not allow scrolling in the chat box so if your PC resolution is set for old people, you cannot use the search.  Having had this issue before, you can, I did, go to forms and enter it directly onto the 1040.  Intuit should fix this .
