How do I add that I am a victim of domestic violence to Form 8962? I'm not given the option when completing the 1095-A.

Here is how to enter that information so that you qualify for the premium tax credit discount on your health insurance plan:

  • Log into TurboTax Online, use the magnifying glass on upper right, type in 1095-A, select "Jump to 1095-A
  • Either add or edit the 1095-A
  • Enter the amounts from the form, continue
  • The next screen is Let us know if these situations apply to you
    • The last option is "I'm married filing separately due to domestic violence or spousal abandonment"

Sorry, do not recall any section of the tax return indicating victim of domestic abuse when it comes to entering medical expenses, a Form 1095-A or Form 8962.  How would that apply to either the 1095-A or the 8962?

That option doesn’t populate. It is only giving me, “I shared this policy with another taxpayer who’s not on my taxes” and “I have at least one dependent on my taxes who’s filing a separate return.”   The system has me listed as filling as head of household instead of just married filing separately. Could that be the reason it isn’t there, and if so how can I fix that?

It basically means I can claim the whole PTC   It is Exception 2 for part IV

The exception for victims of domestic violence means that you are allowed to file as 'Married Filing Separately" (or, if you lived apart for the last six months of the year, "single' or "head of household").

If you are married and get healthcare through the government marketplace one of the first things it makes you do is promise to file a joint return.  So the domestic violence exception is just that - an exception that allows you to file separately.

But there is no box to tick for this exception.  Just file your return and send it in.
