Hi, My federal return keeps getting rejected. My state return also keeps getting rejected. The reject code is F1040-516-01

Can anyone give advice on how to fix this rejection code?

are you someone's dependent because that rejection code indicates someone claimed you as a dependent on their return? if you were a dependent you must so indicate on your personal info page. if not, then you must paper file your returns because this is not a correctible issue that would allow you to e-file. A state return cannot be e-filed if the federal is rejected or paper-filed.

If someone else can claim you as a dependent and you did not mark on your own return that you can be claimed, that is why your e-files are being rejected.    Are you a teenager or a student?   Does a parent claim you as a dependent?   If so, you need to make a change to your return and then try to e-file again.

Go to MY INFO.  Click your name.   Go through the screens for the question that asks if someone else can claim you as a dependent.  Say YES.

If you are certain that no one can claim you as a dependent then print, sign and mail your return and the IRS will sort out the duplicate use of your SSN.

Here is the criteria for someone to claim you:

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2024 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $5050 in 2024 (not counting Social Security)
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.
