Hi, my child does not have an ITIN or SSN, but I am planning to apply for an ITIN with IRS. My question is, a filled tax return is required with the W7 ITIN application

Which then comes first? The ITIN application(which you cant do without a filled tax return) or the tax return (which you cant do without the ITIN).?

The tax return comes first, and then the ITIN application.

Yes, the program will need to have a value in the  ITIN/SSN field before you can finish the return in TurboTax. Here is how to Prepare return without ITIN?

How do I apply for an ITIN?   Use the latest revision of Form W-7,  Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number  to apply. Attach a valid federal income tax return, unless you qualify for an exception, and include your original proof of identity or copies certified by issuing agency and foreign status documents.  See Instructions for Form W-7

Because you are filing your tax return as an attachment to your ITIN application, you should not mail your return to the address listed in the Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ instructions. Instead, send your return, Form W-7 and proof of identity and foreign status documents to:

Hi I am grateful for this answer. However, when I completed the return, I am given the child tax credits that my children do not qualify for, given that I am applying for their ITINs. What would be the best way to address this?

When you enter the dependent information and use the "dummy" social security number, you need to check the box indicating the "Social Security number is not valid for employment".  This will disqualify the Child Tax Credit.

Hi

Have you already applied for the ITIN for kid and tax filing for the year ending 2020 ?

Just need to check the progress status, I just applied today 2/22/21 by sending all the required forms and supporting docs in mail to Austin Tx. A little concerned given the current circumstances.

Thanks
