Hi. I have attorneys' fees from obtaining custody of a child who is unrelated to me. Am I able to claim the fees?

I spent $3,400 in attorneys' fees to obtain physical custody of my daughter's friend in 2016.

No, attorney fees for obtaining custody of a child are not tax deductible.

Only legal fees incurred in attempting to produce or collect taxable income or that are paid in connection with the determination, collection or refund of any tax are tax deductible.
