"Does one of these uncommon situations apply?

This is not money earned as an employee or self-employed individual, it is from a sporadic activity or hobby (this is not common).

I am a professional who was invited to a conference to run a workshop for a day.  This is a one off event.  My hotel and conference registration was paid for by the conference, but I was also given a $900 honorarium and was issued a 1099-NEC.  Am I supposed to check the above box since this is a sporadic activity?

Thanks.

Yes.  This was a one off and you will be taxed on the income but you do not have to create a business as a self-employed individual.
