HELP!!! 1099-MISC CONFUSION

  • I have an odd situation. I received a 1099-misc from a solar company who will be putting in solar panels on my adjacent neighbors property approximately 2 years from now. I and other surrounding neighbors were paid $2500 as part of the project, basically that we won't oppose it. There are no solar panels on my property and will never be. The 1099-misc shows $2500 in box 1 as Rents. How do I file this? If I use a Schedule E it asks how long I used the property and how long it was rented. To me it is not rented because it's not being used. So confused!  Any help is appreciated!!!

When you are entering your 1099-MISC, there will be a screen that asks the Source of 199-MISC? Indicate that it is:  Nonbusiness income from the rental of personal property or equipment.  The $2,500 will be added to Schedule 1 (1040), line l as other income.  It will flow to Form 1040, Line 9.  It will not generate any other schedules, forms, or worksheets to fill out.  It may not really be rental income, but that's the way it's reported on the 1099-MISC, and has no negative effect on your tax return, other than being taxable income.
