Hello, why was I charged $40 for my Illinois state tax return with electronic filing? I thought it was free.

As your screenshot shows, there is a $40 fee for the federal Deluxe edition, and the Illinois state tax preparation program is an additional $40.  I'll share a screenshot from the TurboTax website.  If you click on the "State additional" icon starred, you'll see that there's an additional charge for each state return you prepare.  This charge is in addition to the federal program (Deluxe) that you purchased.

It appears that you're using TurboTax Deluxe Online edition.  In that edition, there is an additional charge (currently $40) for the state tax preparation program.  There is no additional charge for e-filing the return.

I understand the $40 Deluxe fee for the federal charge. However, on the state line, it does not mention Deluxe as it does for the federal.
