Hello, my return was rejected due to the 8936 form not matching the purchase date (01/05/2024). Is there an issue when using this form for 2024?

There is a new requirement with regard to claiming the EV credit.  Whenever a qualifying vehicle is sold, the dealer who sells the vehicle must register the information about sale with the IRS.  This includes the VIN, who purchased it, the date of purchase, and possibly other information.  You should have been given a copy of this report at the time of purchase.

Be sure that the information you entered into your tax return matches that document from the dealer where you purchased the vehicle.  If it does not match, then your return could be rejected.  If you do not have a copy of the Clean Vehicle Seller Report from the dealer, then you should request one.

Also, if the information entered by the dealer and shown on the Clean Vehicle Seller Report is incorrect according to your records, then you should request that the dealer correct the information that they filed with the IRS.  Otherwise, you will need to file your return by mail since the electronic files will not match and allow the return to transmit.
