Hello, I inadvertently e-filed as single when it actually should have been as Married but filling separately. Would that have any negative impact? what should I do?

When you do submit early and find that you need to make a change, you will have to wait until the IRS either accepts or rejects the return.

  • If the return is rejected by the IRS, then you can make the necessary changes and resubmit it.
  • If the return is accepted, then the only way to change it is to prepare an amended return and file it by mail.

Wait until you receive your refund if you are getting one. Then amend your return and change the filing status. You should owe less tax with filing married filing separately status.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I'll just wait until I hear from them.
