Hello. Am I able to mark myself as dependent even though my mom doesn’t file taxes due to being on SSI? I need to file myself dependent to stay on her health insurance.

I just turned 21 two months ago and they took my off her Mass Health right before my birthday. I have had complications now being on my own Mass Health due to my income, but I am a full time student and it’s hard having my health insurance change and such.

If you a full time student and don’t provide more than half of your support you are eligible to be her dependent whether she claims you or not.

Thank you for helping! So how should I select or put in my taxes that I’m a dependent? If you looked at the attached pictures, should I just mark one of them as yes even though they’re both no?

Hi. Yes...Turbo Tax will ask you if you are or can be considered a dependent on someone else's tax filing. While I have always filed as the sponsor or someone else being my dependent, I believe that the option I just provided will allow you to modify the tax return on Turbo Tax for you, and then may prompt you to update your filing status once you have that updated.

I hope this works out for you and for your medical insurance needs.

Take care.

I see the problem which is that to be a dependent you have to be the dependent of another taxpayer so she has to file a return to be a taxpayer. You can check yes to the second question since the reason for her filing a return is to qualify you as a dependent. On her return she should report one dollar of interest to allow her to e-file. For Bank she just writes “To enable e-file”.

So there is no way for me to claim dependent unless she files taxes? She is constantly changing her debit/credit cards and banks so he may be difficult doing that and I think filing taxes in general for her will be a hassle.

She can file for free so credit cards are not an issue. Maybe you can help her file. Check whether you have to be her dependent to have insurance coverage.
