Form 1099-B Transaction for Noncovered Lots.
I have over 800 Return of Principal (return of capital) entries from my Broker. Is there a TurboTax shortcut to avoid entering each transaction (800+ entries) since all I will be doing for each entry is entering the same amount for the cost basis as the amount shown for the proceeds (sale amount), so no gain or loss?
Hopefully there is a shortcut to avoid hours of meaningless typing.
Thanks.
there is n specific shortcut available in Turbotax
what category did the broker use?
A - short term sales proceeds and cost/tax basis reported to IRS
B - ST proceeds but not cost reported to IRS
C - ST neither reported to IRS
D - same as A but long-term
E - same as B but long-term
F- same as C but long term
types A and D can be reported as a single line item for each but should only be reported directly on schedule D lines 1a ST or 8a LT
I would report types C and F also as single line items because the IRS gets no detail but these go on form 8949 which carry to schedule D lines 3 and 10
that leaves types B and E - since you can no longer e file
you can enter as a single line item 1 for ST and 1 for LT with code M form 8949
then attach the 1099-B to your tax return which you must now mail.
