I made a quarterly payment to the IRS during 2016 thinking we would owe taxes. I entered the amount of that payment on line 70 ("amount paid with request for extension to file") on form 1040.
Estimated tax payments should be listed on line 65 of the 1040, if they were paid in anticipation of otherwise owing income taxes for the year.
Line 70 is used to report payments made when you request an extension of time to file your tax return.
To enter estimated income tax payments that you have made:
