Form 1040 Line 70 (I put an estimated tax payment in that field)

I made a quarterly payment to the IRS during 2016 thinking we would owe taxes.  I entered the amount of that payment on line 70 ("amount paid with request for extension to file") on form 1040.

I don't think that was correct and my question is where is the appropriate place to account for any payments you've made of your own accord

I believe that was an error and think I should have added it to the total payment on line 64 (Federal Tax Withheld).  I was confused because it wasn't withheld so put the amount on line 70 - but that is wrong and I wonder where I should account for that sum I submitted earlier this year.  Thank you in advance.

Estimated tax payments should be listed on line 65 of the 1040, if they were paid in anticipation of otherwise owing income taxes for the year.

Line 70 is used to report payments made when you request an extension of time to file your tax return.

To enter estimated income tax payments that you have made:

  • In the search box, enter "estimated tax payments"
  • Click on Jump to estimated tax payments (see screenshot below)
  • You will be taken to the screen where you can enter the payments you made during the year

Note:  In order for your estimated tax payments to be entered on the right line, they must be inputted under Estimated Tax Payments, not under Payments with Extension (see screenshot below).
