We are in our 50’s and married in 2024. My husband has student loans at about $100.000 that are on a payment plan/ deferred based on his income ( he is a school teacher). This is our first year married how should we file taxes? Married separately or jointly? I don’t want my income to effect his repayment structure as it has nothing to do with me
It depends. If things remain how they used to be, Married Filing Separately may work best for him if he is doing income based repayment plans. When filing separately though, you do lose the ability to take some deductions, however, the difference in the monthly payment may more than make up for the credits or deductions lost.
