Filing Status-Head of Household

Can I file as Head of Household if I financially supported my father (who was ill for majority of 2021 and passed away in November) and my 5 year old sister, full time for majority of the year?  They are both US citizens but live in another country.

To file as a Head of Household you must have a qualifying child or dependent.

To qualify, your Father and your sister should meet the following requirements :

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year. Certain relatives may qualify as dependents even if they don't live with you ( including parents and sibling)
  • They made less than $4,300 in 2021.
  • You provided more than half of their financial support.
