Filing status changes

I am trying to get clarification on how my husband and I should be claiming on our W4’s. This year we ended up owing thousands to both federal and state, which we have never owed in years past.

We are married and file jointly. He earns more annually than I do. We both only have one job. He does however periodically have unemployment income when he does mandatory employer training 4x a year. We have no dependents. No mortgage or investments. We both live/work in Montana.

With the newest change to the W4 we are unsure if we should be claiming married filing jointly and both 0, or married filing jointly and 1 or married filing separately and both 0 or married filing separately and both 1. We want to be sure proper taxes are taken out during the year to reduce any owing federal and state. If there is another combo we should be doing please let me know.

Really hoping to get guidance on this. Appreciate it in advance! Thank you

You can use the IRS W4 calculator to help you decide what the best way to complete your W4 is. There is also a way to complete and print Form W4 in TurboTax
