Filing Form 8801 for prior year credit

In prior years, I had to pay AMT and have remaining credits to carryforward - as listed on my 2023 Form 8801 - but did not use TurboTax to file.

For the 2024 tax year, I'm using TurboTax Desktop Premier and have to pay AMT again, but I need to carryforward my remaining credits from prior years.

From what I understand, I should file Form 8801, but TurboTax is not generating the form. The "Credit for AMT Paid in Prior Year" section under "Deduction & Credits" just says I'm not eligible for 2024, since I am paying AMT, which is fine, but how do I carryforward my prior credits then?

When you start the Credit for AMT Paid in Prior Year section, you should get a question asking if you paid AMT in the past. Choose Yes here and the next question asks about your 2023 return. Choose the option that applies and you'll see another box appear asking for an amount from a line on the respective form.

Hello, thanks for the reply. That's what I was hoping would happen, but TurboTax Desktop just says I don't qualify (I have to pay AMT this year).

Even if I don't qualify for the credit, I believe that I need to fill out Form 8801 to carryforward my prior credits.

If you'd like, we can look at your return and see exactly what you see to  help come to a resolution. The return will be scrubbed and won't include any of your personal details.

If you're using TurboTax Online:

Once you're logged in to your account,

- on the left hand panel, click on Tax Tools and then choose Tools

- on the pop up window, select Share my file with Agent

- you'll see a message saying you'll give us a copy of your tax return. Your personal information will be changed so we can't see any private information.

- click okay and you'll get another message with a token

If you're using TurboTax Desktop:

  • Click on Online in the top menu of TurboTax Desktop for Windows
  • Select 'Send Tax File to Agent'
  • Write down or send an image of your token number and state then place in this issue.
  • We can then review your exact scenario for a solution

Please reply to this message with your token so that we can further assist you. Let us know all other states that are included on the return.
