Filing first time since moving abroad and married to non-US resident

Hello,

This will be my first time filing for a tax return since getting married and moving abroad in 2018. I currently live in Greece and for the past 2 years have worked via online English teaching. The income was extremely insignificant for the first two years, so I didn’t file a tax return. However this past year I’ve increased my online work & I receive my money to my American bank account. I want to file this year but made under $9,000. I know it is still a small amount but I want to make sure I am legal regarding my taxes. My company does not provide any tax forms/just the records of the income I earned each month. Also my husband does not have a SS # and is not a resident of the US since we moved immediately to Greece after getting married. My question is what is the exact process for me to file my taxes this year since I have not been living in US for 3 years now but receive my money via direct deposit from my online teaching job? Appreciate the help, thanks.

You are able to enter your foreign earned income without IRS form W-2 as you answer the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion questions.

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Across the top of the screen, click on Wages and Income.
  • Scroll down to Less Common Income.
  • Click Start / Revisit to the right of Foreign Earned Income and Exclusion.
  • TurboTax will ask questions and guide you in reporting income and qualifying for the exclusion.

Your spouse will need an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) if you report your spouse on your tax return.

The IRS states:

What is an ITIN used for?

IRS issues ITINs to help individuals comply with the U.S. tax laws, and to provide a means to efficiently process and account for tax returns and payments for those not eligible for Social Security numbers. They are issued regardless of immigration status, because both resident and nonresident aliens may have a U.S. filing or reporting requirement under the Internal Revenue Code.

You would need an ITIN if any of the following apply to you:

  • You do not have an SSN and are not eligible to obtain one, and
  • You have a requirement to furnish a federal tax identification number or file a federal tax return, and
  • You are in one of the following categories:
    • Nonresident alien who is required to file a U.S. tax return.
    • U.S. resident alien who is (based on days present in the United States) filing a U.S. tax return.
    • Dependent or spouse of a U.S. citizen/resident alien.
    • Dependent or spouse of a nonresident alien visa holder.
    • Nonresident alien claiming a tax treaty benefit.
    • Nonresident alien student, professor or researcher filing a U.S. tax return or claiming an exception.
