Filing a Joint Return when one spouse is deceased

My parents file joint returns, and I enter the information for them, and they use their pins to submit it. The 2023 return is being filed jointly, but my Mom passed away late last year. How do I efile if she is not living?

Thanks

Filing a tax return for a taxpayer who's passed away, isn't that different from filing one for someone still living.

Here's one thing that's different:

  1. Select Personal Info, then select your mother's name, then Edit.
  2. On the screen, Tell us a bit more about (Name), check the box next to (Name) has passed away.
  3. Enter the date and Continue.
  4. When you get to the File section, you should be able to just sign with PINs as usual.

Since this is a joint return, there won't be extra paperwork for claiming a refund.

I'm very sorry for your loss. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out for help again.
