Hi,
I received the stimulus check and I’m not sure if I was supposed to receive it. I am on F1. I filed a 1040 instead of a 1040NR (filed as a tax resident) because I have been on F1 visa since September 2012 (more than 5 years). Using the 5 year mark I should would qualify as a resident alien, however I'm not sure if there is a restriction on age.
I was in high school until 2016 (and under 18) and did not pay taxes for those first few years; I filed my taxes in 2017, 2018 and 2019 calendar years. Should I still be eligible for the check or should I return it/file 1040NR amendment?
@aliiiiiiceee - the qualifications of the stimulus are that you are an US citizen or a resident alien. The F1 visa isn;t good enough,
Since the tax return itself was filed incorrectly, the right thing to do is return the check Either write void on the IRS issued check or write out a check made payable to the US TREASURY. Write a brief letter explaining your F1 status and that your filed a 1040 inadvertantly instead of the 1040NR. be sure your social security number is noted on the check
