F1 (Jan 2022-Sep 2024) to H1B (Oct 2024-current): Resident alien or not?

Hello,

 

I need clarification on my tax status. I was on F1 status from January 2022 until September 2024. Starting October 2024, my status changed to H1B as my employer sponsored my work visa.

 

My employer began deducting FICA and other taxes typically applicable to residents starting in October. Am I considered a non-resident alien or a resident alien for tax purposes for 2024?

 

Any guidance on how to handle this for my 2024 tax return would be greatly appreciated!

For the year 2024, you will be considered a non-resident alien thus you will file a 1040 NR return. Turbo Tax does not handle 1040 NR returns but our affiliate at Sprint Tax does. Contact them here for further information.
