I enter the SDI withheld from one of my W2s, which is $29
TT will not allow me to enter $29 or $1

Please advice.

You will need to make your entries in the step by step section to have it pull into your forms.

Try the following:

  1. Log back into your TurboTax Program.
  2. Select the Federal Taxes tab on the top
  3. Select Wages and Income
  4. Select I'll choose what I work on
  5. Select Wages and Salaries
  6. Select Edit to the right of each W-2 form and confirm your input in box 14 as shown in the sample below.

Your input in this section will pull into your state return and the calculation will be done by TurboTax as applicable.

I modify line 14 from CA SDI to SDI & clicked CA SDI on the drop-down menu, and it's still asking me to put something on line 74 on 540 Form. Even if I put 0 or $1 manually for Excess SDI, nothing works.  Help, I need to get this fixed so I can file my State return, Intuit already got my $25 payment on my credit card.

It does not appear your program fully updated to the new information on Form W-2. Please be sure to complete the Wages & Income section. Go to the main menu and either under Help or Online, depending on the program level, Check for Updates. Close the program completely after exiting and re-open it before proceeding.

Try to leave Line 74 blank if the amount of your CA SDI does not exceed 1% of Form W-2, Box 1.

FTB 2020 California Form 540 Instructions state excess SDI applies only in the following situation:

Refund of Excess State Disability Insurance (SDI)

If you worked for at least two employers during 2020 who together paid you more than $122,909 in wages, you may qualify for a refund of excess SDI. See instructions for Excess California SDI (or VPDI) Withheld.

It appears this is still a problem in 2022 (tax year 2021). I have had no excess SDI withheld, I updated my TT product this morning, I entered my W2 info manually, and still I am not allowed to file. Please help.

@KathrynG3 SDI is withheld based on “gross wages”, which includes benefits, not what’s in box 1 of w2, right? So why does TT trigger calculation of excess CA SDI based on what’s in box 1 of W2?

If you are having issues with CA excess SDI please try these steps:

You will need to make your entries in the step-by-step section to have them pulled into your forms.

Try the following:

  1. Log back into your TurboTax Program.
  2. Select the Federal Taxes tab on the top
  3. Select Wages and Income
  4. Select I'll choose what I work on
  5. Select Wages and Salaries
  6. Select Edit to the right of each W-2 form and confirm your input in box 14 as shown in the sample below. If no SDI leave box 14 blank.

Clear Cache and then log back on to TurboTax to see if this removes the excess SDI:

@HopeS this did not help. I'm not trying to remove excess SDI, but rather, have it calculated correctly in the first place. As of now, TT does not even calculated it despite me having excess SDI.

TT triggered the excess SDI if Your weekly SDI benefits will usually be 60-70% of those average weekly wages, with a minimum benefit of $50 per week and a maximum of $1,620. For 2022 the maximum tax is $1,601.60 per employee, per year ($145,600 x .011

If one employer took out more you have to get it back from the employer.  So if box 14 (or 19) is more only enter the max for box 14 on that W2.

When entering your w-2, put your CA SDI amount in box 14 instead of box 19 so it will be deducted as part of your state and local income taxes paid on federal Schedule A.

You can also try these steps below depending on the version of TurboTax you are using.  I also, include 2 links at the bottom of this post that may assist you.

Excess CA SDI shown on Line 74 of Form 540 comes from the 'California Excess SDI Worksheet.'

You may need to save your PDF copy of your return 'with all worksheets' to view this worksheet.  Make sure you entered the SDI on your W-2 entry in your Federal return.

The three questions at the top all need to be YES.

This reply is to a post from 2021.  The entry in box 14 is not excess CASDI.  It is the amount your employer deducted from your wages.  The limit for CASDI is 1601.60.  I had an issue with Turbo Tax not calculating excess CASDI or SDI on the Excess SDI worksheet and therefor would not transmit my return electronically.  In the worksheet there is an option to right click on the entry for SDI limit and choose "Override" to enter the 1601.60.  In my case and in yours the result in the next line is zero.  Once I made the correct entries and closed the form the error went away, and I was able to finish the process of filing electronically.  I spent an hour and a half on the phone with a TurboTax expert before figuring it out for myself.

Was your California SDI withheld by one employer? If so, you will have to adjust CA SDI on your W-2 and get back the excess from your employer. You will not be able to get a credit for excess SDI withheld by one employer on your tax return, only multiple employers.

The maximum SDI to withhold from employees' paychecks for 2021 is $1,539.58.

Also try some of the solutions suggested in CA SDI tax withheld is greater than max, TurboTax won't let me e-file.
