error: "the submission is a duplicate of one that was previously recieved"

I bought turbotax home and business mac download. I filed one child's return and it was successful. The second one gave the error:  "Transmission failed. The submission is a duplicate of one that was already received."

The file is completely different from the first. I have shut down and cold booted, used a different IP.

When I purchased I read I can submit up to five returns for five different people.

Thanks for any insight or suggestions:).

Review the second return you are trying to file carefully.  Did you use the same tax file as the originally filed return and fail to change the SS# of the primary taxpayer ?

Are you claiming your child?  Check their return and see if they claimed themself.   That is a common problem.  If they did claim themself you will have to print and mail your return this year and they will have to amend.

You will have to print and mail your returns even if the child amends theirs. Once a ssn has been entered into the IRS you can't efile it again. You don't have to wait for the amended returns to be done.

Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them. You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places. Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Or...also check the first one filed.  The forms & personal information for the child's tax return, that you already filed.

IF the child is still your dependent....did you properly indicate that child was being claimed by someone else as a dependent on that child's tax return?  (i.e. presumably by YOU)

Thanks for the post. How do I change the tax file? The previous was on the screen and I did use a differentb ss#  during the input process.

Thank you for the post.  I am filing a return for each child, both of which have jobs. The first went through. I started another with an entirely new form and new info. I will be claiming both so made sure each was not claiming herself.

@greenhouseguy

Are you using the ONLINE program or the Downloaded one ?

If online ... each person needs to have their own account/user ID/password.

If downloaded ... open a new tax file for each person ... in the FILE options use START NEW.

I created two separate submissions on behalf of each young person. Hope that helps.

One more thing ... was the return REJECTED by the IRS  or  did TT give you the "previously recieved" message ?

If the second, your only option will be to print, ink sign and mail in the return since that name/SS# has already been thru the TT system doe this tax  year ...  OR  try using a different tax program ... if this is for a kid try one of the IRS free file options :  https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

I had filed for extensions for both teenagers.  The first worked fine for efile. The second gave the duplicate error.

ok - Thank you.

Go back to the acceptance emails ... did you possibly file the return for that kid instead of just the extension by mistake?    Could the child have filed their own return behind your back ?   Those 16+ have a habit of listening to their friends and messing up the parent's return.

If you are using the downloaded program you can see the filing status for each return.

Thanks. I filed extensions for both. I am sure they have not filed:).

By acceptance emails you mean when the efile is submitted?

Ok ... then back to my other answer.

If the SS# has already been thru the TT system and TT rejected it (not the IRS)  so you have to print/mail in the return.    OR  you can try using one of the IRS free file options and if the return is rejected due to duplication then you will have to print/mail in the return after all.

FYI ... if the child's SS# has already been thru the IRS system not as a dependent then this is mess up your return as well ... you may need to print/mail in your return as well.

.....still not clear IF you "created" separate files with the H&B program  before submitting them separately.

When you startup your H&B program it should show all the different files you created...like shown below.

((This was using Windows desktop...so MAC desktop will display somewhat similarly...)))

But on that opening page, after first starting up, you should see the status of each separate file you prepared.

....those I'm showing are just 3 of the 19 test files I've worked on to check different situations ( so I haven't submitted them ).

So...do you have separate files showing when you startup the H&B software?
