ADD ME TO THE GROWING LIST OF TURBOTAX USERS GETTING ERROR 42016 WITH ZERO HELP FROM TURBOTAX!! WHEN YOU TRY TO GET A SOLUTION, TT MAKES YOU JUMP THROUGH SEVERAL HOOPS, PROVE IT'S ME, ENTER CODES SENT TO MY PHONE, ETC. ETC. ETC. JUST TO SIGN IN TO TRY TO FINID HELP FROM THE "COMMUNITY"!! NO OFFENSE, COMMUNITY, BUT I'M TRYING TO GET HELP FROM THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THIS TURKEY OF A SOFTWARE PACKAGE, BUT THEY HAVE ZERO HELP AVAILABLE!!
INSTEAD THEY APPEAR TO BE WASTING OUR TIME WITH STUPID "BADGES" FOR USING THEIR WEB SITE. WHAT A STUPID JOKE!!
There seems to be a rash of this issue recently ... funny thing is it always seems to happen right after a WIN OS update. So run the WIN OS updates a couple of times and reboot your computer at least twice to make sure they are installed then try the TT program again.
Seems to me Intuit would have solved the problem by now. I, too, am stuck waiting to e-file my return. Don't know what happened this year, but it's the WORSE TurboTax edition I've ever used and I've used many years' editions.
THANK YOU for your comment, but after checking, Windows says I'm up to date. I made it check anyway, and it came up with some optional INTEL updates that seem to be hardware issues. After shutting down, and restarting, restarting, restarting, still getting ERROR 42016.
My only hope is that it's updated enough to file, so I'm going to click "DO NOT TRY AGAIN" and hope upon hope that this TURKEY will let me file by Monday, or else I'm going to be mighty upset.
FYI ... if you file on Monday and it is rejected again you have 5 extra days to refile successfully or mail in the return with the rejection email attached.
Contact TurboTax support and speak directly with a TurboTax support agent concerning this situation.

Has anyone confirmed that updating Windows (10 in my case) will resolve this and not cause another problem ? Right now I am able to access my returns, run through the program, but have not tried to efile yet. I have a pending update 2023-10 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5031356)
THANK YOU, I will see how it goes.
Meanwhile, signing back in here to Community, TT is still awarding me more useless Badges, LoL... Sure wish they'd spend their time fixing all their glitches, and less with this useless online debris.
I tried to install on another computer that has windows os up to date but got same error just launched TurboTax the 1st time.
BTW, I called the customer service and was told that there's an investigation going on this but has no estimate time for resolution.
Questions: what version of TT are you guys have?
I have premier and bought from intuit.com whenit was on a big sale back to December 2022.
In the past, I bought from either Amazon or Costco and never had any issues.
I am unsure if this issue happens on certain version of the software. Just curious.
I need help too. I have spent 3 hours trying to add sales tax for a auto purchase and now I find that all the numbers in the comparison for 2021 are incorrect. I'm not sure where these numbers came from, NOT ME. I have been using Home and Business every years for 15 years. This release is a mess! I need help today.
I tried updating (no updates needed) and rebooting twice and did nothing. Waste of time advice. This is a turbotax problem not a PC problem. Even if it incompatible this is STILL a Turbotax problem. 10/16 is the deadline so they had better fix it now or there is a class action coming.
In order to have 5 more days you need to be able to submit it. Turbotax will not let you submit it in the 1st place. Stop giving bad advice - it's worse than no advice.
You should put that in a separate thread (or contact turbotax phone support). Your problem has nothing to do with error 42016.
When I Google this TT 42016 error, it seems same error has occurred since 2019 and every year since then.
How did previous customers get it resolved and what did INTUIT do to address it?
In the same boat. I tried re-installing the software manually and it still continues to show the same error message!
ANOTHER USER POSTED THIS:
I was able to resolve Error 42016 by downloading and installing the latest version of the program from my downloads. (use your license code for download access if you purchased a cd) When you receive message that a previous version is already installed, choose Remove to uninstall. Once uninstalled, right click on the freshly downloaded program and choose Run as administrator. Proceed with installation.
When you launch the program, if the error 42016 message persists, click Try Again. When the error message persists a second time, click Don't Try Again. For me, the update then began to download and was successfully installed. Upon relaunch, the error no longer appeared.
Thanks, I saw that post also.
The reason I'd be worried about performing an uninstall/reinstall is because of a post someone else contributed where they lost their State product, then TT wanted to charge them $45 for a new copy. That person also had access to a Mac, and cust svc gave him a courtesy free Mac license.
I also don't know if I'd be able to open saved tax returns to continue in a replacement download.
EDIT:
(We can't retroactively edit our posts? What kind of forum is this? )
Thanks, I saw that post also.
The reason I'd be worried about performing an uninstall/reinstall is because of a post someone else contributed where they uninstalled and reinstalled their federal, only to find they lost their State product, then TT wanted to charge them $45 for a new copy. That person also had access to a Mac, and cust svc gave him a courtesy free Mac license.
I also don't know if I'd be able to open saved tax returns to continue in a replacement download.
I see also that TT specifies that the uninstall/reinstall only works for the federal product. They have no option for States.
Now I have to wonder if there's some element buried in their software that isn't shutting down if you exit TT -- I just got another of their stupid useless "Badges" for a 7 day streak logging in - which I certainly hsve NOT done! Is it possible that TT keeps running somehow in the background and that is preventing the updates?
Thinking next year I'll finally dump this awful product maybe.
I purchased TT 2022 and downloaded from amazon in April 23 and filed an extension Since then got a new laptop. Reinstalled the download on new pc at beginning of Oct and got error 42016. Spent a day trying to correct and thought maybe it was Amazon's version so I purchased the download from Turbotax and same result...error 42016. Attempted to install on multiple devices...same result. But, installed TT 2021 on same pc having the 42016 and installation, license and update was successful with no errors.
The customer support "specialist" said this is a new issue and since hearing that I'm seeing on this community site the issue goes back to 2019.
The extra 5 days won't help if I can't download the state software since I won't be able to enter any of the data and even attempt to send vie e-file.
Is this company for real? Isn't this a billion dollar plus company?
I tried that and when I put in my license # it said
This license code has already been associated with an account. Please check that account and look for it in Downloads.
I look in downloads and it's not in downloads.
Catch-22! You need to re-download (assuming that's the right solution - that was from 3 years ago) but it won't let you download. Meanwhile the deadline is looming and Intuit has my $. Like someone else said, this is not freeware. Intuit is a multibillion $ company.
So I called the rep and they gave me a new license code and I was able to redownload and then I did the whole thing that was supposed to work, Uninstall, reinstall as admin, try again and then on the 2nd try again, don't try again. Total waste of time this did nothing. same old error 42016. Rep said that other people having this problem too - some but not all. And intuit is "working on it".
