e-Filing attachments

Why can't we submit attachments electronically when e-filing?
Having used the section summary method for 1099-B entries, we are now required to submit copies of the actual 1099-Bs.  It appears that these must be physically mailed as paper copies.  Why isn't there a way to submit PDF copies electronically?

You can, but only in TurboTax Online.  Uploading a PDF of your 1099-B is only available in TurboTax Online.   The desktop software does not support PDF upload at this time.  See this TurboTax FAQ

The IRS will require a copy of your Form 1099-B if you’re reporting your transactions by sales section totals instead of reporting each one separately, and one of the following is true:

  • You made adjustments to your investment income.
  • Your cost basis isn’t reported to the IRS.
