E-filing 1040SR for an incapacitated parent

Can I e-file a 1040SR for a parent that is incapacitated by signing with the parent's driver's license info and PIN in TurboTax and then mail in a completed Form 2848 covered by a Form 8453?  If not, what do I need to do to e-file in TurboTax?  If I have to sign and mail the return along with Form 2848, where and how do I sign the return?

Yes, if you have filed Form 2848, use the driver's license and PIN that are associated with the Power of Attorney. If you were given the POA, then use your personal info.

The 2848 should be completed first.  Form 2848

You can call toll-free at 1-800-829-1040 to get a FAX number or contact a Taxpayer Assistance Center Local IRS Office.  If you call the local IRS office, you may be able to drop the 2848 off there.  Once you are identified as the Power of Attorney you can either mail or E-file the tax return.

I have already mailed an executed form 2848 to the IRS which they received a week ago. When I e-file the return in TurboTax do I then sign the return using my driver's license infomation and PIN?  Hopefully I don't have to wait for them to send me a CAF number.

No, you don't have to wait. If you have already submitted your 2848, you can e-file the return using the driver's license and PIN.

Thanks for the information.  By saying "using the driver's license and PIN" you mean my driver's license and PIN signing as POA?

Just to close the loop on a related matter.  Would the process be the same for filing a final 1040SR return for a deceased parent? I have filed a form 56 as executor already with the IRS, so I assume I can sign the final return in this case as well.  Thanks for all the help!

If you are not the surviving spouse you will have to mail in the final return ... efiling will not be allowed for a decedent as their SS# has be locked.

Yes, if you are the executor, you must sign the final federal return. If there is a surviving spouse and a joint return is filed, the surviving spouse must also sign the return. You do not need to include your drivers license or PIN for the federal return, unless they had an IP PIN.
