E-File Rejection - Child Claimed Themselves

Went to file and got rejected. My child filed their own return and claimed themselves as independent.

If I e-file without claiming them my liability goes up $500. If I only pay the tax as if I did claim (not the extra $500) and then amended my return with them. Do I have to worry about and late payment penalty/interest?

The amend process takes a long time. Your child should amend their taxes after their return has been fully processed.

You won't be able to efile even if she does amend. Claim her on your return if you are qualified to do so, then print and mail your return.
