I have amended both 2019 & 2020 returns using the associated desktop versions used for e-filing the originals. Both were filed in October of the year due during the extension period. I have read that 2019 can & can't be e-filed, 2020 can for sure. Here is what I'm experiencing. TT navigates clear to the transmit return now button for both years. It circles back to a screen asking about the signature date. I am using the current date. TT is expecting/requiring a date prior to 12/31/20 for the 2019 return and 12/31/2021 for the 2020 return. If that is the case, the window to amend & e-file is much smaller than the ~3 year IRS window.
Am I supposed to lie about the signature date to get it to work?
Thanks in advance.
It can be efiled with professional software. It cannot be efiled with TurboTax. If you use TurboTax it must be printed, signed and mailed.
the IRS allows e-filing of amended returns for certain prior years. in Turbotax, only the 2022 amended return can be e-filed.
Only certain paid tax pros can still e-file past year amended returns. You cannot e-file an amended past year return that you prepared yourself using TurboTax. Your 1040X must be printed, signed and dated in ink, and then you need to mail it in. Use a mailing service like certified mail so you will know the IRS received it, since you will have a long wait for it to be processed.
