During the calendar year of 2024 I was active duty in the military. I never had to pay to file my taxes. Now it requires me to pay. Is there a way to get that exempt?

If you were active military in 2024 then that is what you should have entered in the My Info section of the program.

In the My Info section of the program you need to indicate that you are active military.  You must enter a Military W-2 in the Wages & Income section and after completing the W-2 on the screen labeled Let's check for uncommon situations you will need to check the box Active military duty

When you complete the tax return using the above information you will not be charged for either the federal or state tax returns.

And Note - None of the Live editions are free for the military.

You can file for free as long as you have a W-2 from DFAS entered and you have to have entered a qualifying enlisted rank, E1-E9 (see example below).   Go back and review your entries in the My Info section.   The discount will be applied automatically if you qualify.   Military TurboTax Promo.
