Dual Status Return

I moved to U.S. on November 8, 2024 from Canada. I had income in Canada and I paid taxes there. After November 8, 2024 I was only earning income in U.S. I am filing a dual status return, as I was a resident alien on December 31, 2024.

I prepared a form 1040NR using Spintrax and 1040 using Turbotax desktop version. I followed the guidelines listed here:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/form-1040-nr/file-taxes-dual-status-alien/L0aInfMok_US_en_US

However, I have a higher refund when filing under 1040NR then filing as a dual status return. I am entering federal taxes withheld from 1040NR in 1040SR line 17Z in the schedule 2. I thought by filing as a dual status return, the refund or taxes withheld would be lower.

If you did not become a US resident until December 31, 2024, you would only report income on your form 1040 for that one day.

For questions about your form 1040NR, it would be best to ask Sprintax since you filed that form through them and they support the 1040NR.

I was a U.S. tax resident on Nov 8th 2024 and I am including the income for that period.

Yes, I would agree with Vanessa A and follow-up with Sprint Tax to clear up any discrepancy that you may have.
