TurboTax Deluxe online (the web-based version over the internet) certainly can be used to complete both federal and state tax returns.  However, if you are asking if the program comes with a complimentary (no charge) copy of a state tax program, the answer to that, unfortunately, is no, it doesn't.  A state tax module in TurboTax Deluxe is an extra charge, over the federal program.

That said, TurboTax Deluxe desktop (the program installed from a CD-ROM disc or a downloaded software file onto your own computer) does actually come with (1) free state program included with the federal software.

With respect to e-filing tax returns, the online and desktop Deluxe programs are also different.  With Deluxe online, the e-filing of both federal and state tax returns is free.  With Deluxe desktop, only the e-filing of federal tax returns, and New York state returns, is free.  E-filing for all other states requires an additional fee, although you can print and paper-file a state tax return for simply the cost of postage using Deluxe desktop.

Taken all together, generally the lowest cost customer option for using TurboTax Deluxe for both federal and state is to purchase the desktop version of the program (with one free state module included), e-file your federal tax return, and then print and paper-file your state tax return separately.

But the savings are only a few dollars; and so for the convenience, many people will choose the TurboTax Deluxe online program.  It is, in fact, our most popular TurboTax offering (by volume).

In addition, here a pair of TurboTax product offering websites to help you decide:

you explanation is absurd.  I hope your software adds better than your logic of online TT Deluxe being cheaper than the CD after efile costs are included.  You want to charge me $50 for state online for a free efile for state that is only under $20 with the disc.  Isn't that a $30 profit for  you out of my pocket?  what am I missing?  I get what  you are doing, after all the work inputting it online, who wouldn't pay extra?  But maybe $30 instead of $50 would be something I won't remember next year.  I guarantee I'll remember getting shafted by you and never use this again.  And I've used nothing but TT all of my life since the beginning.... yeah.. I'm old and won't forget.

My deluxe version of TurboTax is a CD, but I accidentally purchased the one without the free state version. Can I upgrade to the regular deluxe TurboTax with the state? I don’t really need the Premier version

@rlawrence2

if you've used TurboTax forever, you should know how it works by now.

Why the sudden upset ?
