Does the IRS care at all about the address on W2s?

Does the IRS care at all about the address on W2s? The zip code on mine does not match a real address so TurboTax said I can’t efile.

Other posts say if you have a wrong address just enter the wrong address from the W2 into the w2 address field, since your mailing address is correct in the TurboTax software entered at the beginning.

However the address on my W2 is not even a real address. So may I change the w2 address to be a real address? To correct the state and zip code? Then it will not match what is on file with the IRS about my W2.

An example if I worked in Yellowstone National Park.

My incorrect W2 states:

Yellowstone National Park, NY 90210

This city, state, zip does not exist and is being flagged as an error.

Corrected address:

Yellowstone National Park,  WY  82190

This would not be flagged as an error, however it does not match what is sent to the IRS. (Or state of WY)

I have to paper file if I don’t correct the address to be a real mailing address.

My company will not issue a correction for an address. They will only issue a correction for a dollar amount or social security error. (I have tried)

Any help would be great.

The worst thing that can happen is that the IRS will reject your return and you will still need to file by mail.  So, in that case, give it a try and change the address to a real state and zip code.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that TurboTax won’t let me efile because of the discrepancy. So TurboTax says I must mail the return.

Otherwise, I am all for your suggestion.

Oh, it just occurred to me that you are saying change the address, and see if it gets rejected when sent electronically.

That’s a good thought. 👍
