There’s no divorce status on the return.

I'm not sure what you are asking. Divorced is a marital status, not a filing status. If you are divorced and have not remarried, your marital status is divorced, no matter how long it's been. When TurboTax asks for your marital status, you should select divorced.

No.  TurboTax is asking (in general) to probe whether you got a divorce in the prior year , or you and your spouse are still married and getting a divorce.  In the later, you would be required to file married filing separate or married filing jointly return until the year in the which the divorce is finalized.  Married filing jointly can be difficult for contentious divorces.

@rjs

there is no divorce filing status on the federal return.

so if not remarried and not head of household, the filing status is single

@Mike9241  I didn't say that divorced is a filing status on the return. I said divorced is NOT a filing status. The TurboTax interview asks the user for marital status, not filing status. One of the choices for marital status in TurboTax is divorced. A divorced person who has not remarried should select that marital status to make sure that subsequent parts of the interview ask the appropriate questions.
