Do you know why for 2024 Child Tax Credit that TurboTax is only calculating a total of $1,000 (for my two children, ages 12 and 13), but for 2023, it calculated $4,000?

Is there a way to override this amount?

You must have answered something incorrectly in  MY INFO.

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number.

Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment.

If your child was born in 2024 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.

There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.

Look at your 2024 Form 1040 to see the child-related credits you received

You need to go through the dependent interviews for both children.   It sound like they are listed as dependents, but not as qualifying child dependents.   Carefully answer those questions.   Confirm their birthdates and SSNs are correct and entered into TurboTax.   The questions are based on the Qualifying Child Requirements, which are below.    More Info on the 5 Tests to Qualify a Child as a Dependent.

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • There's no age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Who can I claim?
