Do you have to have a control number in box d? I’ve always imported my W2 and this year mine does not have a control number in box d but the import requires it.

No, you don't need a Control Number on your W-2 if you type it into TurboTax yourself.

Here's How to Manually Enter a W-2.

Then you need to ask your employer.  But is is just as fast and safer to manually enter it.

W2 box d Control number is not needed.  See

Hello,

My Box D (Control Number) is blank and I tried to import my W2 using the FED ID and my SS# but it didnt work.

So I just want to confirm that I NEED the Control Number in order to import?  Otherwise, I have to manually enter the information?

Thanks,

Sally

Yes, you need the Control Number in box d of the W-2, the gross amount of your wages in box 1 and your Social Security number to import the W-2.  Otherwise you will have to enter the W-2 manually.

Yes, I think this is a bug in the design.  It should allow empty control number.   The control number is blank in some W-2 forms.

I hate that I have to manually enter my W-2 info because of this bug.  My TurboTax software is not free. :(
