Do the N.C. deductions differ from the ones allowed on the Federal return?

Does NC allow deductions for advisory fees of cost of tax preparation?

Yes. There is a difference in federal and state law.

North Carolina has eliminated the advisory fee deduction in their substantial overhaul of their tax code in 2015.

For tax year 2018, North Carolina also does not allow a deduction for tax preparation fees.  The following deductions are allowed:

  • qualified home mortgage interest,
  • real estate property taxes,
  • charitable contributions,
  • medical and dental expenses, and
  • repayment of claim of right income.

Since I have to take the standard deduction for Fed but have another $6,000 in deductions, how do I put them into the NC tax form?

Enter them in the federal section of the program under Deductions & Credits.

They will be pulled into your North Carolina return even though you have to take the standard deduction for your federal return.
