If you're Amending your 2023 Return, use your new 2024 IP PIN.
The annual IP Pin must be used when filing personal federal tax return(s) during the year, including prior-year tax returns and amended returns filed.
In the FILE section, TurboTax may ask you for a 5-digit PIN (or your AGI), which may already be filled in for you from your original return, so you don't need to change it.
I just had my 2023 amended return rejected because of an incorrect IP PIN. I used TurboTax on-line last year and this, and I had entered my new 2024 IP PIN (and this year's return was accepted). However, TurboTax apparently did not use the new IP PIN when it e-filed the amended return.
Now, when I look at my account, it says I need to download the desktop version of TurboTax in order to amend my return, and the link to "Learn More" indicates I will have to purchase the desktop version.
Is there really no way to re-try the e-file with the new IP PIN?
To edit an amended return that has been rejected, follow these steps:
Hi BrittanyS -
I got an email with a different response to my question, but I don't see that here on-line.
I'm signed into TurboTax Online; I go to the "Your tax returns & documents" section at the bottom of the page, and click 2023. It shows REJECTED Amended Federal Tax Return; to the left is a drop-down "Amend (change) 2023 return." When I click that, it says
How to amend your 2023 return
If I go back to 2022 and click "Amend (change) 2022 return" there's a button "Amend using TurboTax Online" but that button is not present for 2023.
Try the following steps to see if it will open the amended return for changes:
I don't see an option to Add a State for 2023, which is the return I'm trying to amend. (I do see the option for 2024, but when I click 2023 in the historical section, there's no option to add a state.)
Can you send a screenshot of what options come up when you select amend your return? Make sure your personal information is not showing when you send the screenshot.
I tried following the instructions available: downloaded my .tax file, downloaded TurboTax for Desktop, but when I tried to open by .tax file, it said I needed to download the state versions, also, and said I needed to pay $45 for each state (I filed 3, but I was able to e-file the one I needed to amend).
I had been trying to do this with TurboTax Desktop for Mac that had been previously installed. Monday, I called Intuit, and someone did a screen-share to try to help. I downloaded TT Desktop for PC; it seems to be a special version for amending 2023 returns (not the regular version like I had used last year). However, this version also insisted on getting the state versions, and it crashed 3 times trying to do so. Finally, we gave up, and the Intuit rep showed me how to download the PDF of my amended return so I could just mail it in.
A 2023 amendment may crash when you try to efile it. You may need to print and mail the pdf.
taxlady28 - The e-file was transmitted just fine with TurboTax online. The IRS rejected it due to an incorrect PIN, but TT didn't crash.
