Do I need to file a tax return this 2025 despite not having actively been in the US since mid 2024 and my contract ending on mid 2024?

Maybe.  Can you provide a little more information to help us provide you with accurate advice?

  • Are you a US Citizen, permanent resident, or a nonresident alien?
  • When were you last in the US?
  • If you're not a citizen or permanent resident, on what type of visa were you and;
    • when did you first enter the US and on what date did you leave?

Hi Susan, thanks!

So I was a non-resident alien physician on a J1 visa. I first arrived to the US back in June 2022 on the j1 which allowed me to stay from 6/2022 to 6/2023. I then renewed it to stay from 7/2023 until 6/2024. I filed tax returns for both of those years but my job contract expired 6/30/2024 and I left the US approximately 7/15/2024. I have not been present in the US since then and have not worked for a US based company since.

Yes, if you earned US income in 2024, you will need to file a 1040 NR return for 2024,. You were still in the 2-year exemption period while maintaining your J-1 Visa status.

As an FYI, Turbo Tax does not prepare 1040 NR returns but our affiliate at Sprint Tax does. Contact them here for further information.
