Filing jointly is usually best, especially if there are children --- so that you get the child related credits.   You can file a joint return even if one spouse had little or no income.

I don't know what you mean by "different".  My wife never worked - always was a stay at home Mom.  We always file jointly.  Just follow the prompts.
