Do I have to mail in the 1040 V Payment Voucher if I elected to pay by direct debit?

No.  If you elected to pay the taxes owed by direct debit from your bank account, then there is no need to mail the payment voucher, Form 1040-V.

Turbo Tax should update is splash page to make it more relevant for Debit/Credit/ACH paying persons. It currently instructs the filer to mail it, but once you view the 1040-V, it states it is not necessary. This makes it a bit confusing for the filer.

Absolutely agree with charters1616 if TurboTax going to make contacting specialists so hard and/or drop customer’s call when their question is “too simple” then the program should be precisely clear.

Very confusing! I opted to spread my payments out over 6 months, entered my direct debit bank info, went through the process of preparing and submitting. Was told by TurboTax to print and mail the 1040-V but did not say to include a check. TurboTax indicates that return was accepted and I am done. HOWEVER...the email I rec'd from TurboTax says I still need to print the 1040-V and submit a check. What's up with that?

same here, rrnaturals, and I've been trolling the forums now for 30 minutes...it's still not clear to me if I have to submit the initial payment in paper form or not.  I still have not seen anything deducted from my checking account but that could just be timing.

@merl2 from what I can tell, I am okay with what I did...set up draft payment for both initial down payment and subsequent payments. Time will tell. I would think Intuit should cover me in case there is a problem, especially since I acted in good faith. If you look at the questions, this has been an issue for TWO YEARS! Come on, Intuit, FIX this.

Why don't you read the answer above at the top of this page?

I also just filed with an installment agreement request. I have gotten contradictory instructions from Turbotax. it is unclear to me whether on April 15 (my specified payment date) the "down payment" will be debited from my account, or whether I have to mail it with form 1040V as indicated by my email from TurboTax.

Does anyone have a clue? This is incredibly irresponsible to leave hanging by Intuit.
