Do I have to file an injured spouse form every year ?

Yes. Every year you file as married filing jointly, with a spouse who owes debt,  you will need to file the form. For more information about the form, please view the Turbo Tax FAQ below.

I have just filed jointly with my wife for the first time in 2019. I owe money for 17 and 18. But for the 2019 tax return we will be getting money back and neither of us owe any money. Do I still have to file an 879?

Yes - If you still owe money to the IRS and you want to protect your wife's part of any refund she needs to file a Form 8379 - Injured Spouse Allocation.  The form can be included with the return or submitted separately.  Please see the following TurboTax Help article for assistance:  How do I file Form 8379, Injured Spouse Allocation?
