Do I get one free state efile with my purchase of a premier turbo tax?

When I attempted to do a state efile I was directed to pay for the state efile even though I had not used the one free state efile I had with the premier tt I purchases. Then when I tried to pay with my credit card, Intuit would not take my payment.  What is the problem?

When you purchase the CD/download product from TurboTax and install it on your computer, the download includes the preparation of tax returns for one state. It does not include efiling the state return. You can avoid the efiling fee by printing and mailing the return.

When you use the online Premier product, the preparation of a state return is an additional $50 fee. The fee includes efiling the state return.

You will have to contact TurboTax support directly to resolve the billing issue.

In all years past I was able to use the one free state efile that was included when I purchased the package.  HAS THAT CHANGED THIS YEAR????

Well, that is not nice.  The price is $24.99 when you 'try' to pay for state efile after one completes filling out the form.

There has been a fee for efiling a state return using the CD/download product installed on your computer for several years.  When they started charging that fee several years ago, I quit efiling my state tax return and started mailing it.

There has never been a fee for efiling the state return using the online product but you must pay extra to prepare the state return.

And the billing issue is with Intuit not TurboTax.

Since Intuit owns TurboTax that may be why you see Intuit and not TurboTax.

That is not true.  This is the first year I have had to pay for state efiling.

As long as I can remember there has always been a fee to efile state.  It starts out at 19.99 (says so on the box) and increases to 24.99 in March.  Used to be mid March but the last 2 or 3 years it increased on March 1st.

Maybe you don't remember the 24.99 because you paid 19.99 before.  Or you had the fee deducted from your federal refund?  Are you in New York?  NY is free to efile.

With desktop software...only NY has a free state e-file...so maybe you used NY earlier?  (not sure how long that has been valid for NY though...sometime within the last 5 or 10 years?)

Went back and checked some of my old records and have a state e-file payment in 2013 for the 2012 tax return, so the e-file charge has been around for at least 7 years, if not longer.

Here's my payments (from Quicken).  First one is 4/1/2011 so that must have been for my 2010 state return.

That is not the way it has worked for the last 12 years I have used it - you receive efiling for 1 state return when you purchase the turbo tax. I do many clients and I mail all the rest of the state tax returns and only efile one, turbo tax processes at least 10 of the state returns that are mailed. This year it says $20 to efile my free state - nope I will mail it.

Were you Efiling a New York State return?   Only NY is free to efile.   Or you had the fee deducted from the federal refund so you didn't actually see a charge for it.

And by the way, Turbo Tax is not licensed for doing returns for clients.  Maybe you are using one of the professional programs?
